SASAKI, Naoki; TSUZUKI, Nao; YAMADA, Michiaki; MINAMI, Takuto; YAMADA, Haruo; 佐々木, 直樹.
This study aimed to establish a standard dose and sample collection time for 13C phenylalanine and 13C-Dipeptide breath test in horses. To evaluate dose-dependent effects, healthy horses received 2.5 mg/kg, 5 mg/kg, and 10 mg/kg 13C phenylalanine dissolved in 1 ml/kg distilled water and 1.25 mg/kg, 2.5 mg/kg, and 5 mg/kg 13C dipeptide dissolved in 2 ml/kg distilled water. Tmax was observed during the sample collection time. For 13C phenylalanine, the standard deviation of Cmax at 5 mg/kg was lower than that of 10 mg/kg. For 13C dipeptide, the standard deviation of Tmax was the lowest at 5 mg/kg. This study revealed that an optimal dose for breath tests with 13C phenylalanine and 13C dipeptide may be 5 mg/kg in horses.

Botulism in non-ruminants in Brazil Ciência Rural
Oliveira Júnior,Carlos Augusto de; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Olinda,Roberio Gomes; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
ABSTRACT: Botulism is an intoxication caused by the ingestion of neurotoxins secreted by Clostridium botulinum and characterized by progressive flaccid symmetrical paralysis. Among non-ruminant animals, avian species and dogs are the most commonly affected by botulism, while horses and pigs are less-commonly diagnosed with the disease. Despite the importance of this disease in animals, the Brazilian literature only includes case studies and outbreak descriptions. The aim of this study was to review the main features and to provide recent data on the occurrence of botulism in non-ruminants in Brazil.

Guirro,Erica Cristina Bueno do Prado; Perotta,João Henrique; Paula,Márcio de; Cury,Yara; Valadão,Carlos Augusto Araújo.
ABSTRACT: Crotalphine is a novel analgesic peptide that acts on kappa opioid and delta receptors, causing powerful analgesia in rats submitted to inflammatory, neuropathic or oncologic models of pain. This study evaluated clinical, behavioral and antinociceptive effects caused by crotalphine in horses, employing 18 Arabian horses and it was divided in three phases. In Phase I, "clinical and behavioral effects", crotalphine did not change the latency to urinate and defecate; did not modify the values of cardiac or respiratory rates, intestinal motility and rectal temperature; and did not cause significant ataxia, head, eye and lip ptosis. In Phase II, "antinociceptive effect on intact skin at scapular or ischial region", crotalphine did not cause...

Machado,V.M.V.; Aguiar,A.C.S.; Viana,G.F.; Crosignani,N.O.; Puoli Filho,J.N.P..
In modern society the work and athletic performance of horses has led to a very important animal production sector in which Brazil possesses the third largest horse stock. Among all equine lesions described, metacarpophalangeal (fetlock) joint lesions are considered one of the main causes of lameness. Consequently, there is a need to improve the understanding and diagnosis of these injuries. The most efficient imaging diagnostic methods for the fetlock region are computed tomography, radiography and ultrasound. Imaging studies of the anatomical structures involving this joint are extremely important to obtain a more precise diagnose. The present study was performed in order to evaluate the capacity of different imaging diagnostic modalities to detect a...
